My branches are also really, physically there and, at least in theory, accessible; just not via time-travel alone. Just like we say the past still exists, but isn't accessible merely by moving through space. So just because we (or the residents of some fictional universe) can't get to these alternate timelines using straight time-travel technology, doesn't mean that the alternate timelines don't "really" exist, and couldn't be accessed by someone with the right kind of magic superadvanced tech.
