Ah... then maybe you didn't get what I meant in the end after all, because that what you just said is how I meant it, so you weren't misunderstanding me if that's what you originally thought.
The distinction I was making was between how someone with omniscient knowledge of the multiverse might model it if they were to draw a graph of the flow of time, versus how someone in the universe would experience it in full 3D as they travelled time. I mean "branching" in the sense of literally splitting off and branching, as would be drawn on the graph that an omniscient person would draw. But of course for someone time-travelling, it would *seem* like the old timeline had been "overwritten" both because you can only experience one timeline at once (the one you're currently in), and because you can't get back to a previously-visited timeline via time travel alone. (It would require some other sort of ability than merely moving forward and backward in time; you'd need to be able to move "sideways" too). From a normal perspective in 3D space with time "flowing" around you as usual, you can only see one timeline, and previously-visited ones are as "gone" as the past of a normal linear timeline is. But we don't really think that the present overwrote the past... we've just moved past the past, and can't get back to it.
So now I guess I'm curious the other way around; when you thought you had understood what I meant by branching in some way other than the above, what did you think I was saying?
(on a related note, the recent Sci-Fi Channel miniseries "The Lost Room" seems to imply something like the whole thing about seeing multiple timelines at once, and how it relates to the Jjaro and W'rkncacnter and insanity in general; someone manages to open up a "hole in reality" which seems to have some sort of horrific psychological effects on those in proximity to the hole).

I mean "branching" in the : sense of literally splitting off and branching, as would be drawn on the : graph that an omniscient person would draw. But of course for someone : time-travelling, it would seem like the old timeline had been : "overwritten" both because you can only experience one timeline : at once (the one you're currently in), and because you can't get back to a : previously-visited timeline via time travel alone. (It would require some : other sort of ability than merely moving forward and backward in time; : you'd need to be able to move "sideways" too). From a normal : perspective in 3D space with time "flowing" around you as usual, : you can only see one timeline, and previously-visited ones are as : "gone" as the past of a normal linear timeline is. But we don't : really think that the present overwrote the past... we've just moved past : the past, and can't get back to it. : So now I guess I'm curious the other way around; when you thought you had : understood what I meant by branching in some way other than the above, : what did you think I was saying? : (on a related note, the recent Sci-Fi Channel miniseries "The Lost : Room" seems to imply something like the whole thing about seeing : multiple timelines at once, and how it relates to the Jjaro and : W'rkncacnter and insanity in general; someone manages to open up a : "hole in reality" which seems to have some sort of horrific : psychological effects on those in proximity to the hole).
