Yup. Right now, as Bob pointed out, we know that you can play as a SPARTAN or as an Elite in multiplayer.

A more Marathon-related point is that you can pick your suit colours in team multiplay; you get a primary and secondary colour. You can also add decals to the shoulder and back armour (I don't think that was ever implemented for Marathon, was it?) and there's speculation that one of them will be a "team" or "clan" logo that you can custom-design for your team/clan. If it's for your clan, it'll be a unique logo on X-box Live multiplay, tied to your gamertag and clan affiliation on file.

It's also known that in multiplayer you can choose up to four teams, and that the game will support 16 players over X-box Live (DSL or cable only, sorry dial-uppers) or LAN... and the option to split-screen or not is in, so you can run up to 16 individual 'boxes in a LAN party. It's unknown if (but unlikely) that means you can tetra-box 16 X-boxes for a 64-player Total Carnage session... *eyes close in blissful imagination of platoon-scale team events*

A rumour, based on a leaked beta photo so take it for what it's worth, is that H2 will also include replay videos. They're really going back to their roots, if it's true.

-- Steve thinks that the auld guard will be pleasantly surprised by Halo2.
