I don't know much about the solar wind type stuff, but a planet doesn't need to have an Earth-range orbit to keep from ending up like Venus or Mercury. For one thing, Venus is the way it is because of a runaway greenhouse effect, not its proximity to the sun. Also I'd imagine the kind of sun the planet orbits would have a major effect on the nature of a planet. Hence a smaller or larger sun would require proportional adjustments in planetary orbit to avoid the planets from becoming extra-crispy.

Now how many other computer game forums are this educational?
