My 2 cents-

How much is Oni inspired by Ghost in the Shell? Oni GiTS

Konoko=Motoko Kusanagi Griffin=Chief Aramaki Shinatama= A combo of Project 2501 and Major Motoko's android self... TCTF= Internal Bureau of Investigations (section 9) Iron Demon=Bad-@ss Fuchikoma The Syndicate=Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oni's Date: 2032 GiTS's Date: 2029

Oni Story: Set in the year 2032, you play Konoko, an elite agent of the Tech Crimes Task Force, charged with infiltrating and destroying a ruthless crime syndicate. Starting as a straight cops-n-robbers story, Oni's story becomes darker and more complex as Konoko uncovers ghosts in her past, wrestles with her identity and finds there's no one she can trust.

GiTS Story: Set in the year 2029, you play Motoko, an elite agent of the Internal Bureau of Investigations (section 9), charged with infiltrating and destroying a self-aware AI. Starting as a straight cops-n-robbers story, GiTS's story becomes darker and more complex as Motoko uncovers traitors in her own organization, wrestles with her identity and finds there's no one she can trust.

(simplified a bit..heh... )

One thing I don't think we'll see in Oni is the Cyberspace/AI/Cyborg aspects. (although it would be a hoot to "link in" to Shinatama, or jack in and kidnap (jacknap?) an enemy character's mind and drive his/her body remotely.. talk about stealth!

We havn't seen many characters that work alongside Konoko besides Griffin and Shinatama... There's the purple-haired guy, (Maybe represents Togusa? Maybe Batou?) plus a lot of specific baddies (all the strikers, tanker, ninja.) which don't have specific counterparts in GiTS...

In the comic book GiTS, Motoko uses a Motorcycle quite a bit...

The complex story line and extensive detail of GiTS probably appeals to the mindset of your basic bungie-literati.

I think that GiTS represented a first introduction for many of us who were unaware of japanese anime and manga, (or had misconceptions) so it holds a special place in many peoples hearts and minds.

Masamune Shirow draws some stong willed, beautiful women... (nuff said)

...well, 'cept I think konoko could look a little more like this ;)
