New Theory - Long
Posted By: opie301 <gtopie301@hotmail.com>Date: 12/9/02 5:28 p.m.

In Response To: Flood and Covenant gods - long (Wado SG)

NOTE: This post is unnecessarily long, but i felt the need to provide backstory. If you wish to go right to the meat of this theory, skip straight to the bottom 2 'paragraphs' of this post.

This all kind of leads me to a much simpler theory...one based on the 'Alien' series. (okay not really)

Okay, you're the Covenant. In your quest to dominate the galaxy, you use religious dogma and military force to bend other races to your will. Those races that appear weak and useful you convert to your cause. Those races that appear either to strong to convert easily or too stupid to be useful are destroyed.

Your Military strength comes from your advanced technology, which, in turn, you have pirated from the artifacts left behind by an ancient and advanced race of aliens, whom you refer to as 'the Forerunner.'

Over the years you have come into contact with one race, and one race only, that has never bent to your strength or cowed to your philosophy. In fact, this race would have consumed you centuries ago except through a severe scorched earth policy and sheer dumb luck, you have managed to escape their threat without further contamination, though personal losses were high. That race is known as the flood.

In no engagement have you ever been able to escape with a sample of the Flood, living or otherwise. Hell, in no engagement have you ever been able to 'escape.' So you know little about the Flood, how they live, how they evolve, how they...die.

But the Forerunner did know. In fact, their apparent ability to control the flood is what has caused you to deify them. You are aware, from the Forerunner texts you've discovered, that a sacred object, an object you call Halo, was once used to study and contain the Flood...and might actually still contain living samples of the Flood in stasis. In addition, the texts hint that the Halos also contain some weapon of enormous power that can destroy the Flood for good.

So, your standing orders to all ships are as follows. (this is where the 'Aliens' connection comes in, sort of)
1) If information concerning the wherabouts of any Halo installation is discovered, the aquisition of this information and its safe return to the Homeworld is of the highest importance. All other objectives are secondary.

2) Should a Halo be found (through whatever means), then:
___a. the super weapon must be located and returned to the homeworld for study and eventual use upon the Flood scourge.
___b. a sample of the Flood (preferably living, preferrably in stasis) in whatever form is to be returned to our Science facilities on Planet Blah. If you find that you are being overrun by the Flood, you are bound by God to destroy yourself and the infection by whatever means necessary. We cannot risk bringing the plague to the inner colonies.

At least that's what just popped into my brain.
