Covenant and Flood.

I have been thinking about many aspects of the Halo universe. The two ideas/problems that have plagued me the most are 1. The Covenant? What holds them together? Why would a bunch of alien races group together under one religion? 2. The Flood? Are they really as stupid as the appear in the game. What haven't we seen? In the Chris Rowley's books the Vang refer to themselves as the Gods of Axone-Neurone. Bungie based the Flood off the Vang, but we don't know how much translates to the game. The first transmission from the Covenant was "Your destruction is the will of the gods." Is it possible that the "gods" that the Covenant refer to are actually the Flood? If the Flood were to spread throughout the entire galaxy consuming everything that they came into contact with, they would basically starve themselves. It would seem likely that the Flood would not destroy every living thing in it's path. They would keep slaves/breeding stock. Is it possible that the Covenant are the slaves of the Flood? Remember that Jason said the Covenant had a long history with the Flood. Is it possible that the Covenant were ordered to find the Halo's and release more Flood? Hedge, are you drooling yet?
