Co-op Night: Uplift Reserve This Wednesday!
Posted By: KermitDate: 9/27/11 1:52 a.m.

A Band Apart ODST-style!

Co-op Night is Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST

New Mombassa Uplift corporation is not too happy about their park, given that it's been overrun by Covenant, its animals scattered, dead, I don't know. UNSC forces are fighting to take it back, and not fairing that well. Fortunately, a certain ODST trooper was blown off course and landed on the edge of it. God only knows why he landed there, but he might as well lend a hand.

Welcome back, friends. Most of us cut through Tayari Plaza like we were hot knives through softened butter, but it was fun regardless, and this week we're going to do something a little different to slow things down a bit.

This week's battle plan:

Mombassa Streets > Uplift Reserve

No vehicles

Tough Luck, Thunderstorm, Tilt, and Mythic (plus the fun skulls)

Free for all scoring on

Yes, make sure you've got your hiking socks on because you've got some ground to cover. Need I remind you to stop and smell the rotting Zebra corpses? Seriously, though, take time to take notice of what you haven't really looked at before. You never know what you'll find. Communicate, pay attention to where your fellow soldiers are, ask for help if you need it, give help if you can. Don't rush!

Also, this will be the first week that we begin in the unlocked Mombassa Streets level. We'll jump out of pods, regroup, set our waypoints to Uplift Reserve, and fight our way through the dark over to the optics package from the crashed UCAV Drone Fighter. Cue the cutscene, and through the magic of flashbacks it will be 30 minutes after drop. Let's roll! Or, er, let's not actually roll.

If you haven't yet, be sure and send a friend request to Coop Night on XBL. This will help me organize teams.

Thanks,

Kermit

P.S. You may wonder where the ODST Firefight recap is, and the answer is that those nights won't have an official report like campaign co-op nights have had. From what I've heard, we all had a good time, and 200,000 points might have been a little harder to get than we anticipated, but we got there. I will say it's a bad sign when you're going for the Be Like Marty achievement and you hear Jeff Steitzer say, “Last Man Standing.”

Co-op Night FAQ

Why co-op?

Many of us will never be particularly competitive in matchmaking, yet we love Halo--inhabiting the worlds that Bungie has created, relishing the story, and kicking alien butt. Sometimes this can get lonely, though. NPCs are not always the best conversationalists, much less the best battle bros. Co-op campaign matchmaking in Reach often led to less to ideal play experiences, and co-op nights are an opportunity to play with some of the coolest people on the planet, your fellow HBOers.

What will we play?

A campaign level is planned every other week. The long-term plan is to play through all the Bungie games that allow online co-op. For ODST, we will play Firefight maps on alternative weeks, most often using a map closely associated with the level we played the previous week. This allows those of us who haven’t to earn the Firefight score achievements and fans of ODST firefight to just play!

Why only one level?

There's no limit to what you can play. The battle plan is just a starting point. If you want to continue to play the next level, that's fine, but personally, I’m about savoring one level per night. Simply put, Co-op night is about having a night where if you show up, it's assumed you are interested in co-op with HBOers, and you’re committed to playing through one level.

Why is scoring on?

To keep us honest, partly, but I'm going to try to track stats of the "canon" games. It won’t be as easy as it was with Reach, but we’ll see.

So there are no rules?

Not really, but the goal is to milk as much fun as possible out of each level, and for the most part, this means full path Halo, playing more as less as Bungie intended, saving Earth with style and leaving piles of dead Covie in our wake. This is not high speed Halo. Ideally, we'll play as true comrades in arms, communicating (mikes on--but not to chat with your buddy who's playing Black Ops), sticking together, and watching each other's back. On co-op night, assists count as much as kills.

When does it start?

9 p.m. Wednesday night. Yes, you will probably be done before 10, but think of that as a feature, not a bug.

Why Wednesday?

Wednesday just seemed like a good day--it breaks up the week for those of us with not a lot of time to play on school/work nights.

How will teams be formed?

Here's the step by step of how team formation on co-op night works. It’s a little different than it was in Reach in that you’re going to have to switch from your Reach disc to your ODST disc.

1. Send a friend request to the gamertag Coop Night on XBL.

2. Much like what Hyokin does on Customs Night, if you're online at the designated hour, I assume you have an interest in co-op and invite you to my party in Reach.

3. If and when we have a full room, we play a short game and the results will serve as our randomized team list. I'll assign team leaders but otherwise we'll count off four from the top.

4. The party leaders leave to form their own Xbox Live party, inviting their assigned teammates (usually the two to three names under them in the last game results).

I hope to begin playing by 9:15.

I love Mombassa Streets! How will that be handled?

Halo ODST wouldn't be what it is without Mombassa Streets, so when we can we’ll start in Mombasa Streets (exiting a drop-pod each night) and set waypoints to the clue that triggers the level we want to play. We make our way through the city killing every Covie we stumble upon, and we’ll have access to goodies like Mongooses!

We'll do something different once we get to Data Hive, but we'll give special instructions that week.

I have two films at the end of the night. Do I save both in my fileshare?

One person from each team should save a film to their fileshare. Mombassa Street films do not have to be saved unless there’s something noteworthy to see in them. Please note what I say about timestamps and films in the next answer.

Are there any other special considerations since this is ODST?

Yes. Everyone will have to carry a slightly heavier load to make this work smoothly. I suggest people keep a pen and notepad handy for two reasons. (1) if you’re chosen as a team leader, you might want to write down the names of your teammates before the switch. I won’t be able to track everyone to make sure everyone gets on a team as easily as I did in Reach. (2) When something wild and crazy happens, it might be helpful to write down a timestamp immediately. (Snipe did this last time for Reach.) Reliving the highlights is one the fun aspects of Co-op Night, but since ODST theater does not have rewind, unfortunately, I’ll have to adopt a timestamp-or-it-didn’t-happen policy as far as the write-ups go.

But what about my friends?

You have friends? Congratulations! Gathering a party to play co-op should be easy whenever you want. Quit your bellyaching, soldier! You've got a job to do. Co-op night isn't about playing with the same old people you always play with. It's about playing with the HBO community, and maybe forming new friendships and bonds forged in brightly colored blood.
