RTX Write-up
Posted By: LuronoDate: 5/30/11 3:49 a.m.

Well, I'm back from RTX (the first official Rooster Teeth fan convention in Austin, TX) and wanted to do a quick and dirty write-up of the event (I'm still pretty tired, it was a long weekend)...

Things started Friday night at 8 PM at a hotel in Austin, Texas. A clumped-up, messy line of fans had formed inside the hotel lobby by the time I arrived. I honestly couldn't tell you where my girlfriend and I ended up in the line, we just hopped in where we thought was the end (it's hard to find the end when the line connects to itself). The doors opened right on time and we all funneled in to a large room filled mostly with tables and chairs. Across from the doors was the stage where the Rooster Teeth crew would introduce themselves, and to the right were numerous TVs and projectors prepared for the night's events. Everyone took a seat and waited patiently until the RT crew entered from the same doors we had. They made their way to the stage and were introduced one by one by Burnie Burns and Geoff Ramsey (every RT cast and crew member were present except for Gavin, as far as I know). Next up we got to hear a short speech from the bald one himself, Frankie (during which he did say he was in Dallas, we were just too polite to correct him. A few cocktails too much, perhaps ;-) ).

After Frankie was finished Max Hoberman of Certain Affinity took the stage to announce their new action RPG, Crimson Alliance. He joked that Frankie wouldn't let him show anything Halo related (unless we REALLY wanted to see Defiant again) and that they had this secret product they had been working on. His words were something along the lines of "I thought, shit, why don't we show that?" The trailer was interesting, though it didn't show much. So far all we know is that it's a top-down, Diablo-esque RPG that strips away cumbersome elements like inventory management. Hoberman explained that he had wanted to make an action RPG like this since his days at Bungie, citing what Bungie had done with the RTS genre and Myth as his primary inspiration. After the presentations everyone was free to mingle, drink, and generally have a good time. I personally got to talk/take pictures with Joel, Gus, Nathan, Jason, Chris, Griffon, and Ben (this was my first fan event/convention so it was really exciting!).

Saturday morning everyone was shuttled over to the Alamo Drafthouse, a theater in Austin that serves food and drinks during movies. The pre-show reel involved an episode of the old Super Mario World cartoon/Captain N: The Gamemaster, the RT Doomsday short, and an RvB animated short. The screening itself included a couple upcoming RT shorts, a Slow-Mo Guys video, and the first few episodes of RvB Season 9. As before, we were asked not to record anything or really talk too much about what we saw (wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone anyways). I'll simply say that everything I saw was the quality I expect from the Rooster Teeth crew, which I feel is high enough praise.

After the event at the Alamo we were taken to a field outside of RT HQ, where much beer was consumed and much conversation was had. I met many, many wonderful people over the next few hours. During this time artist Luke McKay drew RT comic pictures of fans, various cast and crew talked with whoever wanted to talk, an epic sing-along of the Pokemon theme occurred, and fans got the chance to go on a tour of the Rooster Teeth office/studio. Their office is a very nice place, I'm happy to see that they're doing well. While on the tour they had us do some screaming for the audio in a scene that we saw in the Season 9 screening as well as a few other shots in front of a green screen (I'll go ahead and stay vague on that in case they don't want anything in the open yet).

Everyone met back at the vacant lot bright and early Sunday morning for a RT video shoot involving all of us. I won't give many details, but I will say that they had us dress up as zombies (keep in mind there were over 400 of us at this event). We had a lot of fun in between takes, at one point we did a little of the Thriller dance, and another point we did a zombie wave. One of my favorite moments though was when on guy yelled out "What do we want?" and everyone said "Brains!" in their best zombie voice. Next he yelled "When do we want 'em?" and everyone paused for a split second before simply replying "Brains!" Ah the fun of like-minded people =)

Ultimately it was an awesome event and a pleasure to attend. Living in Oklahoma I don't really get the opportunity to go to any fan events, they are always too far away or at a bad time. It was a blast to finally meet some of the cast, crew, and other fans! Moments like this are what fan communities are all about!

P.S. I should hopefully have some pictures online some time tomorrow, my girlfriend has them all on her camera. Hopefully I'll also have video of Matt singing the Forge World and I've Got the Blues songs in his Sarge voice =) I'll post things when I've got them!
