Halo: Reach Challenge Initiative
Posted By: HaLo2FrEeEk <halo2freeek@gmail.com>Date: 4/9/11 3:38 p.m.

I know HBO probably picked up quite a few lost HIH-ers after the big freeze, so some of you guys might remember Fortune and Man Demon's Daily/Weekly Challenge help/tips thread. If you're familiar, skip the next paragraph, if not, read on.

The help thread was started by Fortune shortly after the game came out as a way to help people complete the challenges more quickly. He posted his own tips and tricks on getting it done. After a while it became too much for Fortune, so Man Demon started running it and did a fantastic job all the way up to the last day. To me the thread was a daily visit, looking around and seeing Man Demon's tips on the best way to accomplish a challenge.

Ok, now that we're on the same page, let's continue. Also shortly after the game came out, I had a similar idea. I would create a database that would use the Halo: Reach API and get the new challenges every day. Users could log in and post their own tips and tricks, and other users could comment and vote on those tips. The more votes a tip has, the higher it'll appear in the list, making the community the ultimate decider of the best way to complete a challenge.

When Ducain announced the closure of HIH, I made it my goal to finish my project (which at the time didn't have a name). Unfortunately, there was more work involved than I'd imagined, so it's not done yet, but I am at the point where I'm accepting candidates for testing.

The service is super simple to use, all you need to log in is a Twitter account. I've registered an application with the Twitter API that allows me to allow users to sign into my site using Twitter. Once done, you'll be asked a few (optional) questions about your account. For example, if you'd rather your tips or comments be posted under a different name, you can specify a display name different than your Twitter name. You can also fill out your email, in the future I plan to allow users to be emailed when someone votes or comments on their tips. Finally, you can choose your activity tweeting preferences. What this means is that you can choose to have a tweet posted to your timeline whenever you post a tip, comment, or vote. You can choose to tweet any or all of these activities (or none), but rest assured that your account information is safe, all I store is an access token, which allows my service to post to your account on your behalf, it doesn't actually give me access to your account itself (meaning, I don't have your password or anything like that.)

You can read a little more about the service here:

http://reachchallenges.infectionist.com/info.php

And for more up-to-date information, you can follow the Twitter @ReachChallenge.

Like I said, I'm almost at the point where I'm looking for testers, so anyone that wants to help out just let me know either here or through the Twitter. I'll need to add your IP Address to the list so you can gain access.

Hopefully with this service I can come close to filling the shoes that Fortune and Man Demon wore, and offer something really cool and helpful to the Halo community.
