Ran the wife over with the Warthog..
Posted By: DarkSkiesDate: 11/2/01 10:01 a.m.

Hi guys and gals,
We went christmas shopping last night and I decided to see if the xbox kiosks
were running Halo at my local mall. Well the first shop I went to had DOA3 and some other games demoed on it. I asked on the the guys playing it if he had tried Halo, which the kiosk has a 3 foot poster of halo right underneath the controllers. Anyway he said that a store in the upper level had it so I preceeded my way upstairs. I went into the store and the xbox was stuck in the main window of the store surrounded by a bunch of boxes. I asked the guy behind the counter if we could try out the xbox, and he said Sure no problem. When I approached the system I noticed that Halo multiplayer was already running so I decided to reset the system.
First impression of the title screen was pretty sweet. I finally convinced the wife to come join me and try this out. She was very hesitant, but she finally gave in. I decided to try the MP part of the game since I didnt want to spoil the single player story for me.

Sniper level: MP : (Ice level) i'm not for sure what the map name was didnt really care at this point....Let's just play...

The game started with a 10 sec countdown and within a couple of seconds I managed to figure out most of the controls. I spent another couple of minutes explaining to the wife what to do.
The level started with the sniper rifle and the pistol. The first thing I noticed was all of the eye candy, which was very nice. You could spend most of your time just walking around looking at things. As more of the ppl on here that have tried Halo will tell you that the video you saw is nothing compared to actual game play.
Basic movement was a little tricky at first. I'm not going into actual controller config since I'm pressuming most of you already know what they are.
When first getting my bearings it happened that she spawned up right behind me about 5 feet and started shooting me in the back, so I whipped around and fragged her. Since being a split screen you can kinda guess on where the other player is. As far as the radar I didnt even bother to look at it while playing. The next spot happened to be inside a building. So when I was admiring all of the eye candy, looking down at the ice and snow, I happend to glance up and she managed to get into a warthog and was trying to figure out how to drive it. She seemed frustrated that she couldnt get the warthog to go anywhere so she jumped out and started walking again. The sniper looked pretty good, 2x,10x zoom. I was thinking that there was a 5x zoom but I was wrong.
So I took some time and showed her the basics. She ended up in the building again so i began searching for the warthog. After exploring the passenger side and the gunner view, I jumped into the drivers seat. After some time trying to figure out how to drive this thing I was able to finally go in a straight line. After driving around for a bit I hopped into the gunner view and start blasting away. One thing I noticed on the gunner that when you continue pressing the fire button it kicks in a secondary mode which speeds up the fire rate. So while I was wasting the ammo which seemed unlimited I saw her peeping out of a window so I gunned her down. Of course she got mad again, hehehehe.

I popped back into driving mode and was doing doughnuts on the ice and saw her running across the map. SPLATTTTT Waylayed with the warthog. That really set her off so she decided to quit playing and wanted to go shopping.
I checked out another MP mode: something with like sniper but only rockets. Pretty amazing to find out that the rocket launcher has zoom function. Another person jumped in and it seemed like he didnt play too much video games or whatever. I noticed he kept trying to walk into the side of the cliff so I decided to put him out of his misery with a rocket in the back. He soon left.

THE FOLLOWING IS MY PERSONAL OPINION: TAKE IT AS YOU WISH

I've been following the progress of Halo and was seriously thinking about buying an Xbox and Halo. After playing for 15-20 minutes I've come to the conclusion that my money is going towards the PC version of HALO. The console gaming system was a great idea 5-10 years ago but I dont see the value of spending a good chunk of money for a gaming system that is limited on its functions. This has nothing to do with the xbox. Its more of a home gaming concept in general. When the PC market came into play, affordability etc, it opened up a greater band of opportunity of functionality for gaming systems. Before the public had access to home pc's the only options you have were home gaming systems, which were great at the time.
I do plan on renting an xbox system and halo. I usally play the demo version of the game to see whether or not I will purchase it. I can justify spending $30-50 on a PC game that will have entertainment value for weeks or months.

I do want to point out one thing tho, as in numerous posts I've read, there is an issue with aiming accuracy concerning PC vs Consoles. I think the an option for the console gaming industry would be to eliminate the joystick that controls the view and replace it with a small trackball like for instance on the Logitech Trackman Marble. That way you have the accuracy for aiming plus still having the playability of the controller.

OVERALL: I think Bungie has done an excellent job. Without getting too political, I feel that HALO has a far greater opportunity on the PC side. I don't know all the specifics of porting from an xbox to pc but If they put the basic gaming functions that are in today's games, they will have a game that will be played for years.
