One of many benefits that come with life in a beautiful country like Australia (I've never been, but hope to remedy that someday) is the proximity and plentitude of hungry Great White sharks, and apparently a surfeit of goofball game shop employees who might better serve as shark food than as vectors for misinformation. When I follow this thought to its logical conclusion, I achieve a state of being which the Australians might call "bonzer."
The "PC Halo is cancelled, we have reliable information from inside Bungie/MS, let's all freak out now" story is still bogus. It was bogus a couple weeks ago, and the time before that, and so on. The next time it pops up, it will still be bogus.
If shops want to cancel pre-orders, that's their business; we certainly never instructed them to start taking your money. When the game ships, you can either buy it from them, or perhaps from another retailer where honesty is not in such short supply.
In closing, I'd like to state that it's a good thing Great White sharks never battle hippos because then I would have to pick a side.
