About the Halo stability
Posted By: Nathan <nathan.bitner@botcc.com>Date: 12/15/99 1:33 p.m.

Some points I thought I'd throw out since I had to study so much freakin' astronomy in so short a time a while back ...

- To my knowledge, despite the translation of the German article, Bungie has never mentioned that the Halo may be crashing into a planet. I think this is something that just kind of got "lost in the translation".

- A "halo orbit" is a STABLE orbit around a specific Lagrange point. Only two Lagrange points (L3 and L5 I believe, but I don't remember for sure) can sustain elements in a halo orbit.

For example, there are asteroids in Jupiter's leading and trailing L. points that both orbit the Lagrange point as well as follow Jupiter and its moons around our Sun.

There are references to this definition of a halo orbit in the stuff about Island Four's posts. Think of this as the Halo's "rotation" while the movement, along with Threshold and it's moon, around a star as being it's revolution.

- It is CENTRIPETAL force that would hold an atmosphere in, much like the water in a spinning bucket (the old 4th grade experiment).

- There has never been any talk by Bungie about black holes. Some little bits of info. are getting stretched into some crazy stories. ;)

Hope this helps a bit.

Nathan
