Who's to say that the level is atmospherically independent from other areas of the Marathon? Maybe there WAS a loss in air, but the sheer volume of air within the Marathon probably negated any noticable effect.

In any case, I think that the designer of this level simply overlooked these details and was more concerned with other, more important things about the level, such as gameplay.
