Not even programmers think like programmers! The comparison with engineers seems apt; while I'm sure some people working on Aleph One also make maps, a lot of them seem more focused on adding nice but unnecessary features rather than fixing engine flaws and adding genuinely useful features. (That's not to suggest that all of them are worthless, however; 3D models have some serious potential once the implementation is refined a bit, and Bridges and Balconies would be incredibly cool if it were actually in Aleph One.) : we have the comments section, but only about a tenth of any of them are used. If you mean the "Proposed Enhancements" section (at source.bungie.org), that seems to have been dead for some time; the last update was in 2001. : Maybe we should put together a team of programmers who have an agenda. Lack of leadership is certainly one of the problems with the Aleph One project; there's no list of things that need to be done, so people just do whatever they want, regardless of how useful it is to other people and whether or not it breaks another part of the engine. Of course, it's good to keep in mind that these people are volunteers, dedicating their own time, effort, and headaches to a project that they don't get paid for. Working with source code written by another person (especially code as nasty and complex as the M2 source) is a lot more difficult than many people realize, so the people who have taken the time to contribute to Aleph One should be commended for their work. It's just a shame that the project as a whole is in such a mess; hopefully the Aleph Modular project will be more focused and better structured. | |
