Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think that it's pretty universally agreed that the thing that made the original Marathon Trilogy so great was the tight integration of action and story. In that respect, Rubicon excells. TI does extremely well in this regard, too. Evil is fun to play, but the story is really pretty lame and the ending is a bit hard to swallow. Evil is still one of my favorites, but it doesn't feel like part of the Marathon Universe - Ironically, TI does better in this regard, even with the time travel component.

One of the most important aspects of game play for me is exploration. Evil and TI are both pretty damn linear - there is almost always one next place to go. Obviously some linearity is necessary - it can be very frustrating to have to search for the exit on every level - but Rubicon feels real, just as did Bungie's own creations. Remember Come and Take your Medicine in M2? The objective was very simple and the player needed only to dash to the control room and destroy 2 panels. Doing so exposes the player to perhaps only 1% of the level. But there is so much to explore here! Very few mapmakers will go to the trouble of creating such an extensive map for a relatively simple task. Some mapmakers don't even include secrets to speak of (Goran, is this hitting home?). Great play is about being surprised - Evil did this with its devlins and the fear factor. Rubicon did it through the shear genious of Chris Lund's mapmaking and the extensive story integration of Scott Brown. I'd love to see this team work together on another project.
