: Why is that, I wonder...? : Hmmm. Well, I can think of three reasons:
It's interesting to note that, yes, Rubicon can be less than linear in parts. Heck, in the second level, there are a whole bunch of areas which you don't even need to go to at all, just as an example. And it took me ages to figure out how to finish *just that level*. But, hey, I don't play my maps 'cause they're pansy. I can play rougecx's stuff any time I like if I want that.
The nonlinearity, I think, adds to the experience, in any case. Many of the levels *feel* like they're real places, something which many maps sacrifice to preserve the ideal of "Linearity". Few things in the real world are just a single, winding corridor, with an occasional puzzle along the way. I mean, what kind of idiot Ph'for commander would make something like that? : )
I've played EVIL. It's pretty good. Certainly, it is not the work of children. But it starts of great, (Drevilins were cool, and VERY scary. Brought me back to what M1 was like when I first played.) But then it drifted away from it's roots very quickly, and eventually came to this garbled mess at the end. What *was* that all about? They really just should have stuck with eeire corridors and Drevlins waiting around every bend. The mystics were silly and boring, in my opinion. And the Rubicon terms just make it so much cooler. Few mapmakers, I think, realise how much a good story can make or break your map. But really good, concise, mysterious terms...
