Rubicon Volunteers - Final Screen

The Rubicon Final Screen. Some have said it gave them chills. One person even asked for a full-size poster of this image. This is a beautiful play on the themes of the Marathon Trilogy, and it really helps to solidify your place in the Marathon Universe, as well as in Rubicon. Let’s take a look at the words expressed here and try to fathom what they mean. Here is my take on them:

Son of ether, bastard child of magic and technology, victory's fabric, weaver, and loom

We are a creation out of the substance of space itself – an unintended hybrid of the magic of the Jjaro and the technology born of a previous war. And yet we are both the director and the instrument of the fabric of time.

Fate has called you a thousand names, and he will call you a thousand more before the world goes dead and cold

Fate has called us to do many things. Of what we did in a previous life we do not know. As a securtity guard on the UESC Marathon, we fought back against the Pfhor and instigated the S’pht rebellion. On Lh’owon, we crushed the Pfhor and brought back the 11th clan. When the end seemed near, we altered time and changed the course of history. And in Rubicon, we did so yet again. And we are not finished . . .

You were always his favorite - a glaring question mark among rows of uniform punctuation

This harkens back to the Infinity final screen. Durandal always tried to put us in our place, but he kept coming back to us, even when we served Tycho. We stood out among the other cyborgs. We were destiny.

The constant struggle - a pursuit of balance for one, escape for the other

We were always involved in a struggle, but it was never a matter of the battles we fought. Durandal sought escape – from the Marathon, from humanity and, ultimately, from the closure of the universe. But our struggle was about something more – born of Jjaro origins, we sought to fulfill their goals, to achieve a perfect balance in which neither good nor evil could overpower the other.

Favors for favors, a sword, a microchip, a friend

We are dependent on each other – neither of us could manage without the help of the other. We wield the sword of Durandal, yet his blade could cut our hand.

The champion commemorated each victory won, nigh singlehandedly. When the curtain falls, it matters not

Who is controlling whom is immaterial – in the end our relationship of convenience – our friendship – allows us both to achieve more than either could alone. Durandal may never escape the closure of the universe, but he will grow by trying and come to realize why he too must come to an end. And you will accomplish much with his help, maintaining balance in a way that Thoth never could. The Jjaro left much behind that would be used in ways unintended, but you, a creation of them, can make it right.

For you know as well as I that you cannot be Destiny without being a Hero

’Nuff said.
