Rubicon Volunteers - 10001 Nordic Nerds

10001 Nordic Nerds – well, we know about Chris, so where are the other 10,000? Anyway, Durandal has sent us to explore the Dangi Sector of the super-secret Salinger research station. Something fishy is going on here, and Durandal wants us to find out what it is. When we start the level, we are confronted with a couple of doors that won’t open and a terminal:

Entering a Restricted Sector

--------------To the right: UESC Sector 16a
--------------To the left: Dangi Lab 7/X

Please wait for identification...

//////processing UESC access request///////

UESC Identification has failed. If you are attempting to access a UESC Sector and have a valid ID, please contact Charlie or a system operations official.

This entrance attempt has been logged.

How typical. We’ll be able to gain access later, but for now there’s only one way to go – down. When you do, you’ll quickly discover that the Bob’s aren’t on your side here. You’re in the Dangi sector, where you’re an unwanted intruder, and the Dangi security force will do everything they can to take you out. Speaking of which, this will be your first encounter with a new enemy – the maser Bob. Maser Bobs carry Dangi Masers – the most powerful hand-held weapon in the game. If you skipped the Pfhor plank, this will be your first encounter with this weapon that can, literally, paralyze you and kill you in a matter of seconds. You need to be fast with the Maser Bobs or you’re dead meat. The one consolation is that they have no natural shielding of their own so that, like the magnum Bobs, they’re easy to kill. Hit’em quick, hit’em hard with dual magnums and then grab what they drop.

Interestingly, Durandal never gives you any direction on this level. The one time that he contacts you, it is to release the security lockouts on those and other doors in the station, giving you full access:

I'm surprised. The Salinger uses an entirely different logic structure for it's security access codes . . . Not that cracking the access codes for the Dangi sector of the Salinger took me more than a handful of microseconds. Still, what corporate programmer was expecting his code to be worked on by someone with a brain bigger than any planet in the galaxy?

There is another way to get to the upper level without waiting for Durandal’s help, as outlined in my Rubicon Secrets Guide, which can get you to that 2X recharger sooner if you so choose. Beware, however, that when you do get up there, you’ll be under much more aggressive attack, and not just by Bobs but also by Pfhor fighters and troopers. By reading the terminals, we have a chance to piece together even more of the Salinger story:

The design of the Achilles virus was a sheer act of genius on behalf of Arthur Frane, head scientist for the Dangi Corporation. . . he hand coded the RNA sequence . . . Initial testing yielded results that far exceeded the expectation of even the most ambitious member of the board of directors. . .

Arthur Frane – haven’t we heard that name before? Remember that terminal on the Infinity secret level You're Wormfood Dude? Could this be the same guy, the chief petty officer on the UESC Marathon? Could he have returned to Earth with Robert Blake, become a senior scientist working for the Dangi Corporation and taken up such dastardly work? Probably not, but I doubt that the reuse of this name is pure coincidence, either. Continuing on another terminal:

We're running out of human subjects to inject with test vaccines, and the last shipment of "volunteers" from outerworld prisons is nearly two weeks past due. Management is driven enough that I halfways expect them to start forcing lower level workers to be test patients.

The worst of it all is that we're no closer to a breakthrough than we were when Research Group 25 discovered a way to successfully cure infected subjects by injecting processed stem cells in the lymph nodes. Unfortunately, dosages have to be carefully monitored - a very ineffective large-scale cure.

Wait a minute – weren’t they using Pfhor prisoners of war? Is this an inconsistency? Probably not – the Dangi board of directors would certainly be resourceful enough to use both and, remember, not everyone knew the whole picture, so it’s quite possible that the person who wrote this was unaware of the POW subjects. If they were using outerworld prisoners, then this means that Dangi very likely had deep connections within the UESC, which they probably did in any case.

At one point fairly early in the level, Lysander talks to us directly:

You are a painfully obedient fool. Painfully because you will suffer at my hands for your unwelcome intrusion. Fool because you believe you will not. /-Lysander.out

Finally, we will ultimately make are way into the center of the Dangi sector on the second level, where we will grasp the full extent of the Dangi plan:

Phase 1 of the Dangi Control Seizure Plan (DCSP) will begin as soon as word is received from UESC tactical command that the Pfhor have surrendered. The Achilles virus will be administered . . . to the seven main food distribution companies, in the form of a preserving chemical compound. Shipments of infected food will reach every populated world within three weeks, and the virus will be activated shortly thereafter. DCSP Phase 2 will begin as soon as the first cases of the epidemic are reported. The directors of the Dangi Corporation will approach key members within the UESC head government, offering the cure in exchange for control of specific aspects of the government. DCSP Phase 3 is the complete assumption of all governing power by the Dangi Corporation. . .

///authorization:Lysander

I have given you ample chance to cease your unwelcome interference here. You have breathed your last breath aboard this ship, obedient fool. Waste away, nobody mourns the ashes of a prisoner. lysander.out

Help! Durandal, what have you led us into?!! This is another key, pivotal point in the game. No choices to be made, but we’re about to become prisoners of the Pfhor, thanks to Lysander, and our escape from prison and return to the Salinger will be critical in eliminating the threat to humanity. The Jjaro will therefore contact us again through an unprecedented triple dream sequence, starting with another Things May Happen level, followed by People under the Stairs and Comfortably Numb.
