In Response To: The Case of the Seven Dials (Hamish Sinclair) All the circles have eight numbers place uniformly around the edge, so I assume that these numbers serve the same purpose in each cirle. The trick is finding out what each circle is supposed to represent, finding out what the numbers around the edge mean in relation to the circle, and solving the symbol in the middle. First, the general ideas: The circles could serve a few roles. They could each represent an idea in the Marathon universe, for example. The numbers around the side of each circle could be level numbers (if all three map files were shoved on top of one another) which contain terminals that illustrate the idea. Perhaps they're just meant to group the numbers together in an interesting-looking way. The numbers could be levels, as said above, or a number of other things. They could be polygon numbers in certain maps, whose number is the glyph in the middle of the circle. They could perhaps be a coordinate system of some sort. The glyphs in the centers are the strangest part. They all seem to represent numbers, expressed in a variety of different ways. Maybe each deciphered number is used to "point" to a number on the outer side of the circle. You know, an Indiana Jones type deal where a puzzle must be solved to determine the correct door. We have eight "possibilities" in each circle, perhaps only one is "correct" per each. The numbers in the center could be degree measures of the "correct" number. As to what each "correct" number represents, we have yet to find out. Maybe we're going about the whole thing in a much too complicated manner. Maybe each central glyph represents a prominent feature in a particular level. Then, the specific ideas: As I said above, each central symbol could represent a number. This could perhaps be used to determine a specific other number on the edge of the circle. Right now, we know the Mayan one on the very right. The "ESE" has been speculated to mean east south east, which could be translated to rotational measurement. ESE would land right between the 0 and the 6 on the circle, or 112.5° from the top, -22.5° in standard right-based measurement. This is 15*PI/8 in radians. Perhaps the fifth circle is a number in an arabic number system. The sixth circle appears to be a euclidian coordinate plane, with numbers in each quadrant. I don't know what is in the first quadrant. (It seems like a detached lowercase gamma.) The second quadrant is c, i.e. the speed of light. This is a very large number, roughly 3.0 x 10^8 meters/second. I don't know what's in the third quadrant, it may be a number in another archaic system. In the fourth quadrant is e, about 2.718. This constant is best know as the natural growth and decay number. Every natural growth and decay process can be mapped on a natural logarithmic curve, that is, a log base e. The formula e^x can be expressed as the sum of all terms (x^n/n!) from 0 to infinity, but I doubt that is of any consequence here. Wow, that rant turned out pretty long, thanks for reading it. |
