Deja always had this and had been promising to make it public for years after they'd found a good way to deal with the disk and access load it would create.
(Much of this is probably culled from INN server operators with good tape backups. Most of the time added comes from a period when it was actually practical to archive a newsfeed, so it all just had to be spun back up off tape and onto disk. Things like that definitely take time, man-power, and money, none of which Deja ever had in abundence, but which Google seems to be on top of.)
