In Response To: Re: Volunteers: Aye Mak Sicur (Forrest of B.org)

: Then again, in M2 it's never adequately explained how Durandal escaped
: Tycho's trap and his supposed death... in Infinity, he only survives
: because WE take his "primal pattern" away from the scene of the
: crime.

Personally, it doesn't seem to me like primal pattern abduction even factors into Durandal's M2 escape. His Fatum Iustum Stultorum explanation is pretty straightforward--the Pfhor trapped him for study, he managed to break out (or sneak some commands out to the S'pht), and he took over that ship. It's not incredibly detailed, but I'm not sure how much of a cyberspace Great Escape the Marine (let alone the player) could be expected to understand or care about.

Plus, if he had escaped via his primal pattern being abducted by someone (his Marine, an alternate-timeline Marine, a Bob), it's hard to see how he would have ended up on the Pfhor flagship. Surely he would have been reactivated within a S'pht- or human-controlled system as he was in Infinity?

I think we get a bit more info on Durandal's M2 method of escape in the second Rage timeline, where Tycho anticipates his "disgorging a thousand wriggling worms into the S'pht consciousness" once he's captured. That seems to imply that he escapes by leaking commands out of his prison and controlling the S'pht indirectly.

Of course, this method must fail in order for the galaxy to be saved; if Durandal escapes by himself as he did in M2, then he never has a chance to merge with Thoth. The latter says "Your construct/bethought himself higher/awaiting far beneath/my fate was written," which suggests to me that Thoth knows he's supposed to merge with Durandal, but that Durandal would have too much pride to do this willingly even if he knew it might be a good idea. He certainly doesn't seem to think much of Thoth in M2. So the Marine has to go down there and plug Durandal in personally while he can't say no.
