The marine was forced, at least in part, to work for Durandal. In M durandal puts us through his test, he wouldn't have to if the marine was already loyal to him. And on Eat it, Vid boi! you can find an uncompleted level message from durandal
it reads:

If you insist on stumbling around when our
time here is limited, I may just decide
that you're not all that special after all
and teleport you out into space.
