: Hey, they're working on it, OK? Do you think you could do better? They're
: trying to bring the code up to date, integrate dozens of new features,
: make it stable, and have a normal life all at the same time. It's not like
: these guys are getting paid for this, or have any kind of obligation
: beyond what they give themselves. There has been talk on the
: marathon-devel list recently about getting out a stable build with all the
: recent enhancements, and they're working on it. It's hard; I'm a bit of a
: programmer, and I know how hard it can be.

OK, OK - I know how difficult programming can be. Although my students do most of the work now, I had years of experience way back when and I know how difficult a project like this can be. I also know all *too* well how tempting it can be to add lots of new features before the basic code is finished. It's only natural. Writing new gee-wiz code is a lot more fun that tracking down and squashing bugs, optimizing existing code and polishing the rough edges. I've been guilty of this myself - particularly when I was a grad student - and getting my own students to optimize code and adequately comment/document it for the next student is, well, it just doesn't happen.

Don't get me wrong - I am *very* appreciative of everything Loren Petrich and the rest of the A1 team have done - but as a consumer, I have a legitimate gripe. Yes, the latest build improves compatibility with the Classic Environment in OS X, but A1 will be left in the dust if it isn't ported to carbon. I guess they can be forgiven in light of the time it's taking Adobe et al to bring out carbon versions of their software, and I know that I'm very impatient ;-) . I'm just saying that the open source community ought to focus on getting builds out the door that at least *match* what the infinity engine could do before adding new enhancements.
