From what I understod, they kidnaped the REAL children, and replaced them with clones so the parents don't notice. That's why they are so bothered with ethics later in the book.

The problems his, why wouldn't they use the clones for making Spartans? They could make them in numbers... Possible awnser: Maybe the clones are weaker because they are fast-grownt.
