: They could have gotten this location from Durandal, since we
: know we failed to kill him in time on Hang Brain.

I'm not so convinced of this. After all, we did pick up a chip containing Durandal's primal pattern at the end of said level. If we didn't actually destroy Durandal, but rather he was captured by the Pfhor, then why did he need to compress himself down to the chip, and how could we and the Pfhor both have Durandal at the same time?

Perhaps the answer is not that we didn't destroy Durandal in time and the Pfhor downloaded him, but rather that we did smash Durandal's circuits in time, but that we feel some strange loyalty to Durandal, or rather Durandal has some strange power over us (remember the final terminal, "We release whatever hold we, as Durandal, may have had on your soul"?), and we are unable to bring ourselves to destroy him. The way the Pfhor capture Durandal, and the way Durandal subsequently overpowers the Pfhor and causes them to use the trih xeem was not that the Pfhor caught Durandal, but instead that the Pfhor caught us, and we had Durandal's chip (Ever notice how the uplink chip is confiscated not long after Durandal gives it to us?). I think that in By Committee, we are in the same timeline as Hang Brain. The difference is that we are taking a different strategy now, not that we are in a different timeline. The Pfhor took Durandal's chip from us, but our helping Thoth allows him to recover it and beam it down into the pool in Strange Aeons, thus saving the universe as we know it. :-)
