I agree, the troopers and the fighters are essentially the same beastie, however, it looks like the troopers are vacuum-enabled (the helmet, etc.), whereas the fighters do not (remember the Rch'zne floating-in-space term in MI?). Now, all the critters would be able to survive in low gravity (even the original Marathon pfhor ship had low grav.). Post-naval trauma was not necessarily vacuum, just no-oxygen. However, I did manage to blow myself out of the windows one time...
