See Marathon: Rubicon and Myst 3: Exile as examples of what happens when one tries to mimic someone else's idea of what is cool. The sub-quality aspect inherent in these works (which is NOT to say that they are sub-quality as a whole) can be avoided if you go with original, self-conceived ideas.
