I've always been troubled by the discrepancies you mentioned, too.
: IF Tau Ceti is only 11.x light years, by doing simple math the trip
: would have taken approximately 35 years (one generation of Bob's)
: and the Marathon would have arrived circa 2517, and the attack
: would have taken place circa 2538.
The problem with this is that, if there was no warp technology involved, the acceleration and deceleration required to travel 11 light years in 35 years time would subject the human crew to a continuous gravitational force of approximately 5 G's, if I've done my math right. You couldn't stand under that kind of gravitational force - your heart couldn't pump blood to your brain. Now perhaps we will have learned to create artifical gravity fields by then to counteract the effects of acceleration, or perhaps we will have some degree of limited warp capability based on transporter technology - just not to the point of FTL travel. Oh well, it's all sci-fi anyway.
