: Odd...

: Hamish, I mailed you the explanatory bit of the email to me with PID's
: shapes.cpp in it. Mind putting it up somewhere?

I hope you were referring to this bit of email. Here goes:

From: Matt Soell <msoell@microsoft.com>
Date: Tue Dec 10, 2002 7:18:49 PM US/Eastern
To: Alexander Strange <feanor@ithinksw.com>
Subject: Re: Marathon, Open Source, and You. :-)

On 11/17/02 5:20 PM, "Alexander Strange" <feanor@ithinksw.com> wrote:

while I have your attention, got any information on the Pathways
Into Darkness Shapes file format? :) It seems to be encrypted, and
noone's been able to crack it.

I went and asked Jason. "You've got to be kidding," he said. I wasn't.

He turned to his laptop and within moments was scanning the Pathways source
code. "This isn't any more difficult than the Marathon stuff." And yet
people are asking, I said.

He forwarded the following to me, and I now pass it on to you with the
understanding that this is NOT open source, freely-released, cleared for
posting on websites or general distribution among the tiny handful of coders
who might be interested in such things. This is, as they say, for
educational purposes only and should not go past you. I hope you can glean
something useful from it, but please don't spread it around.

He titled it "Toasting Marshmallows Over the Viking Funeral of Pop Culture."
Make of that what you will.

PS: It's full of the weird little garbage characters that spring up when you
copy text from some jive-ass MS app and paste it into plain text. Sorry
about that.
