Well (as the FAQ page states), the most important thing it lets you do is beat Habe Quiddam. But, in terms of the story, no one is really sure.
Durandal says "it will allow you to slay more Pfhor," but you can slay Pfhor just fine without it (with cmd-opt-begin). The theory (in terms of the story) is that it may allow the player to recharge at Pfhor recharging stations. After all, why would the Pfhor have rechargers aboard their ship that only humans could use? The lesson being, you're not alone when you wonder what it does.
