Heh - interesting timing with this rant. Doesn't look like you read alt.games.marathon... but I posted the other side of this just yesterday. :)
My contribution starts here. You weren't around when the fighting started, so you're forgiven in your misunderstanding of the core issues. :)
And I think you can trace the lack of smaller projects DIRECTLY back to the programming decision to add stuff like OpenGL capability and 3d model support AT THE START. If Aleph One had started out as a supercharged Infinity (that is, contained ALL the features of Infinity, but with bugs fixed and relatively minor mapmaker-requested features added), and THEN had OpenGL/3D models/bridges/whatever added, you'd see a far more vibrant community, I think.
Of course, that's just an opinion. You're welcome to disagree with it.
