In Response To: Re: S'pht & Pfhor languages - do S'Pht Speak? (Steve Levinson) : Not until we make them bloody ;-) : It's incredibly human-centric to think of ears in terms of the external
Sure, but the examples you mentioned are either water-based or amphibious creatures where external sound amplifying appendages aren't necessary. I don't think it's human-centric at all; it's an evolutionary advantage for certain animals to have such appendages...take owls for instance, their very faces are huge sound collectors, and this is a tremendous advantage to them. And this may be a long shot, but from the pictures we've seen of them, can we really deny the fact of S'pht physical evolution? Sure, take away their implants and they have the brain of a cocker spaniel, but could an animal that is nothing more than a giant floating brain survive with the anatomy and physiology of a modern s'pht? In Charon Doesn't Make Change we learn from the pfhor studies of the f'lickta: "Our scientific studies have revealed that
So do the s'pht and f'lickta share common ancestors or what? In Six Thousand Feet Under we read: "Fleeing all W'rkncacnter, Yrro and Pthia settled upon Lh'owon. They brought the S'pht, servants who began to shape the deserts of Lh'owon into marsh and sea, rivers and forests. They made sisters for Lh'owon to protect and maintain the paradise." So did Yrro and Pthia bring the common ancestor of both to Lh'owon or the separate species together? Remember how the f'lickta were left behind to keep the ducts clean...are they the "sisters" spoken of, since f'lickta are pretty good at defence and maintenance? The point is that the s'pht we see in the modern incarnation must have done some extensive evolving, for if they came from the same envrionment as their cousins the f'lickta (who have had to evolve nasty claws and teeth and fire-ball hurling abilities to survive), they would have, in their non-cybernetic state, had a body "fitter" than a big cerebrum. Back to the topic, what if s'pht language was both audible AND technological, simply not spoken as we know it. Much like how a modem or fax machine would communicate...the structure of the language makes it efficient enough so that it doesn't have to be spoken, merely conveyed from speaker to microphone on these creatures...wouldn't at least THAT make more sense considering that without their cybernetic implants they're just animals anyway? I'm not saying that the whole S'pth language thing is a bad idea...what Vid Boi did simply kicks ass, and if interest continues it's something I'd like to learn... I'm merely stating that they lack the anatomy in which to communicate as humans do, and that assuming they do is more human-centric than anything. Yossarian...
