In Response To: Re: S'Pht Numbers (Steve Levinson) Yeah, IIRC all our "multiples of 60" systems (time and angles, until we learned the *wonders* of radians) go waaaaay back about 5,000 years to the ancient Sumerians, who used a base 60 system. They loved the number 60 for just the reason you mentioned: it can be easily and cleanly divided by all the really important numbers: 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30... The Mayans used base 20. I'm not so sure why they did this, but I got a chance to see some of their number tablets in the Yucatan Peninsula last Spring (and I visited some pyramids, too, but they were definitely Mayan and there were absolutely no shambling monsters or sleeping gods ::grin::), and it's a fascinating system. I think a base 6 or base 12 system would be logical for the S'pht, but of course it's hard to say, especially with such incredibly advanced lifeforms. At some point we'll just be making a judgment call. -Max
