In Response To: The little Esperanto of Bungie fans :P (Vid Boi) : L'o S'pht'rhl r'aracthi r'acn'ktra,
this is quite a remarkable work vidboy! i've attempted an analysis of the letters and phonemes of the S'pht language which might help if we are to construct an alphabet. i'm unsure however if the language was ever meant for such close scrutinization. vidboy's poem holds the following phonemes: consonants: c, k, l, n, r, s, t, w, ph, th, lh, rh, '
my take on the "lh" and "rh" is that thay are voiceless "l" and "r" just as in lappish (closely related to finnish) and sindarin (one of tolkien's elvish tongues). the apostrophes might be used as a stop as in Klingon and Robert Jordan's Old Tongue and therefor might be considered a letter by iself. within the the name "S’bhuth", how would one pronounce the "bh" phoneme (and does this mean there is a "b" phoneme)? my guess is that just as "ph" turns into "f", "bh" turns into "v". on the other hand, there are the clans of S'pht'Vir and S'pht'Val both which are spelled with "v". the clan "S’pht’Shr" seems to hold a "sh" phoneme, dare we assume the presence of a "kh" as well? we know from the Forge-movies that "S'pht" is ponounced "sfit". the question is: why is S'pht spelled with a "ph" when "F'lickta" is spelled with "f"? why are some words spelled with "c" and some with "k"? even more interesting, why is there a "ck" in the word "F'lickta"? could it be for historical reasons similar to the spelling of 19th century swedish were a word like "bliva" was spelled "blifva" but still pronounced the same way. the name of the two moons "Y'loa" and "T'jia" contains the letters "y" and "j". "y" most likely is consonantal. thru the names "Pthia" and "S’pht’Nma" we also get "p" and "m". i don't know if i agree with vidboy abouut the letter "h". there's the question of the names "S’pht’Hra" and "K'liah'Narhl". thus, so far the list of phonemes look (more or less) like this: consonants: c, f, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, s, t, v, w, y, ph, th, lh, rh, bh, sh, '
----- oh, and finally, unles someone already found it, here's an example of some pfhor-ish ;) "Phan Pfhar Sfaern-Wsawn Tshah" = Ministry for the Eradication Through Imitation of Hostile Species Unsuitable for Enslavement -- hugo forss |
