Just a few things to add...

If you're interested in playing the Marathon trilogy, you can buy the Macintosh versions online at store.bungie.com (they're part of the Mac Action Sack bundle); if you use that other platform (Windows, I think it's called ;) ), you might be able to find a copy of Marathon 2 on eBay, or you could try and figure out how to use Aleph One (source.bungie.org), the open-source version of Marathon that's been enhanced and ported to run on Windows. I think some people here are using Aleph One for Windows, so they might be able to answer any questions you might have.

If you're not interested in playing the games, and just want to know what in the heck we're talking about, your best source of information would be the Marathon's Story Page (marathon.bungie.org/story/), which contains just about everything you'd ever want or need to know about Marathon. You might want to read the summary Scifiteki linked to first, just to have an idea of what's going on, then look at any of the pages in the "Facts and puzzling things about..." section that seem interesting. Eventually, you'd also want to read the in-game text itself; the links in the sidebar under "Marathon", "Marathon 2: Durandal", and "Marathon Infinity" go to pages containing all of the terminal text in the trilogy. The Marathon and Marathon 2 terminals are even formatted to look exactly as they do in-game, so if you're only interested in the story you don't really even have to play the games.

Anyway... Welcome! It's nice to see that people are still becoming interested in Marathon, even eight years after its release.
