Even though it's speed was negative (it was moving backwards) its : velocity per second was incrasing, so it must have been accelerating! I'm reasonably sure that any positive change in velocity in any direction is considered acceleration; as Tru7h said, forward and backward are strictly abstract concepts (can a particle be considered to be moving backward?). If acceleration is an increase in velocity, and velocity is the displacement of an object over time, than it really doesn't matter which direction the object is being displaced in.
