In Response To: Political Structures in Marathon (REB) : UESC: ???. There are no indications of what political system the UESC is run. Well let's take a look at what it stands for: United Earth Space Council. United would suggest a gathering of parts. As to whether or not Earth at this period is a Federal, Unitary, or Confederate system can be determined by making a few free connections and loose assumptions. I seriously doubt that any government that has to be large enough to control several billions of humans could be unitarian. In order for a government of this magnitude to control all governmental concerns on a global level would most probably require the majority of the planet's population to run it (although the Pfhor system is not unlike this). Confederate system of government is also not very likely since it would require more cooperation among nations to start Mars of as a colony and create and launch the Marathon than a confederated Earth system could conceivably muster. I'd say that from what we've seen in the game, the U.E.S.C. most probably follows a federal system of government, this would make the most sense because the most powerful and influential nation in the historical period before the politics preceeding Marathon's launch had a federal system. A federal system would almost be a requirement because of the Earth's diversity. Council would suggest a possibly representative form of government (though also pretty bureaucratic). Of course, it's also possible that UESC is just like the People's Democratic Republic of China, a meaningless acronym acting as a political facade. : Apparently, it's some derivation of Apartheid. All civilian personnel on
I don't think that the human population of the Marathon could be considered a representative sample of the Earth population or government system because it had been separated from the Sol system for so long and a ship requires different governing styles than a planet. :Under the rule of Durandal, the situation changed: I'd say the humans under Durandal's control were in a more or less totalitarian dictatorship in that Durandal had a plan and had orders for them whether they liked it or not. The Boomer didn't have room or resources and Durandal didn't have the time nor patience for slackers or rebels. This wouldn't be a tre fascist rule by Durandal since the BoB's didn't admire him necessarily or follow him cultishly. Additionally, it couldn't have been a communistic system because the BoB's did not control the means of production or its distribution (if they did, do you think they'd share the rocket launcher with YOU?). It also wouldn't have ben a capitalistic rule since there was supposedly little to trade or buy on the Boomer. Durandal controlled all. : Hence, we don't know if for sure Blake was a
Ah, but you forget he chapter screens, my man, creations of Bungie, and therefore the absoulte tru7h. Blake was, indeed, a caucasian. Also, I don't recall any really black Bob's, I seem to remember the skin tone going from white to a deep olive...maybe I'm wrong. As mentioned before, I doubt if the UESC is a dictatorship. We only hear of one real politician in Marathon, and that is the dude giving the speech that we learn about by reading Strauss' journal. As far as I know his position was one of an executive nature and not necessarily of a dictator (although we was surrounded by many bodyguards). : The S'pht: Socialist. While they still follow the rank system imposed by
Don't we learn that at the end of M2 that the clans have reformed but have not taken up their old clan rivalris? I think this suggests that the post M2 s'pht society was more of a Technological Socialist Confederacy. : The Pfhor: Imperialist. Government have complete control of the individual.
Whew..the pfhor..try this: An Imperial Caste-based Bureaucratic Totalitarian Ogligarchy. You could also make the case for a fascist state, but then again I suppose one could argue the same for an ant colony. : JJaro = ??? I tend to think that the Jjaro socio-politacal system eventually evolved into a sort of post-marxist state in which government entity was replaced by the order of personal understanding of co-existence and pure cooperation on the level of the individual. I dunno...call it utopia (but we all know what utopia is another word for ;) But I tend to believe that in order to understand the political classification of any alien species one must first take a close look at the characteristics of the individuals that said species are composed of. i think that about wraps it up...and yes, you will be quizzed on this.
