In Response To: MARATHON = and != HALO (paolo) : M and H are not in parallel universes but in the same universe, only in a
Consider a wheel. We (the characters in the story) are standing on the rim. The wheel goes 'round, bringing us back to the exact same point where we began, if the only thing we look at is the wheel. We're at a very different place along the road. Is the Paolo Conjecture pretty? Yes. How much pretty? Very pretty. Is it true? It's only as true as the facts it accounts for, and the meaning we can draw from using it. : After the Marathon Universe took place, it closed according to Durandal's
The closure of the universe is still an open question here in the real world. The Paolo Conjecture requires us to assume that Durandal is right, and that the universe is closed. This does not conflict with anything we know about the real world. Let's also assume that Durandal speaks truth (as he sees it), and is not deliberately trying to mislead us (a reasonable assumption). If he's right about closure, let's assume he's also right about the existance of a means of escape. Durandal saw the method, and successfully made use of it (this is an assumption, he might have failed). Durandal is now outside the system, and can look backwards to see how everything fits. Escape has made him God. There's a piece we're missing here. God not only _knows_ all, He can _do_ all. We have said nothing about Durandal attempting to influence events back on the wheel. Do we have to? Everybody go re-read the third Cortana Letter. This is an attempt by the author to infulence events in the Halo gameworld by sending information to the player. What can we conclude about the nature of the author? I agree that it is product of a mind that is (or once was) clinically insane. Further, the explanation for the absense of the Halo builders troubles me. He (she, or it) doesn't think they're dead, or just gone, he thinks they're being held as slaves? 'Dead' or 'gone' are simpler explanations. Why does he think they're slaves? Well, we know that life experience colors you view of the world, so perhaps the author was once a slave? Did Nathan Bitner author the Cortana Letters? Sure he did, and he wrote them using the voice of a fictional character. What is one name of that character? (I'm absolutely *NOT* claiming that N.B. is insane. I do say that he's really good at writing monologue for a fictional character who is insane. The lawyers may now stand down.) : Only, this time something went wrong. Somebody (durandal? Cortana? I don't
It's pretzel logic, but it all hangs together. Nice work, Paolo.
