While I agree with what you say (meaning that it makes no sense to have all that backround stuff and not include it in the game), Halo is just about what happened on installation 004, and that's it. Nothing before it and nothing after it. Everything online and FoR and any other sources of story are just mere background to what takes place in the game, and why some of the actors and events happen during the gameplay.
