: We had a conversation about this a while ago. My personal opinion is that the
: engine type (i.e. instead of true 3d you have flat floors and ceilings) is
: known in the industry as a 2.5D engine -- because it's not quite 2d (since
: it has Z-depth) but its not quite 3d (since you cant have, say, slanted

: So, everywhere a level overlaps itself, you have (2 * 2.5D) = 5D space.

Well, I think your math (2 * 2.5D = 5D) is a pretty sound guess as to why the folks at Bungie would call it 5D Space. But I think there may have been other reasons as well. As far as I can recall given my limited understanding of modern theoretical physics, we all exist in 4 dimensions. The first three dimensions are the three primary dimensions of space and volume: length, width, and height. The fourth dimension is time, and you could say that we are constantly moving through the fourth dimension as time continues to pass. I think the use of the term "5D" refers to the fact that different matter occupies the same space in the level and seems to operate beyond the four dimensions we recognize, or in the fifth dimension. Modern Superstring Theory suggests that there may be several dimensions that exist beyond the four we observe every day, but that many of the higher dimensions may have collapsed on themselves very early in the universe's existence.
