In Response To: AGAIN: WHY YOU/HE DIDN'T KNOW? (paolo) : No matter if you (the marine) are/are not the mjolnir cyborg.
A lot of interesting ideas have been discussed, but I think that there are 3 primary reasons that can be reconciled with the plot without having to throw up your hands and say, "For Pete sake, it's a game!" 1) The Marathon is huge. Presumably, we only visit a miniscule fraction of it in the game. Although a cyborg should easily have enough storage capacity to carry the entire map database as well as data on the locations of pattern buffers, shield and O2 regenerators, weapons lockers etc., there is no way the marine could remember all of this without the aid of his cybernetic implants. 2) The Marathon has changed. The Marathon is under attack and Durandal has sabotaged many functions. Many doors and features do not work. Some passages are blocked, and there are numerous boobytraps. Any data stored in the marine's implants would have to be considered unreliable. In times of war, protocols are developed to deal with unreliable data, but the Marathon wasn't designed with war in mind. You would think that the security officer, particularly if he is a battleroid, would be able to handle this, but for whatever reason, his implants are unable to handle the conflicting data. In other words, the implants by design or malfunction are treating the existing map data as completely unreliable and not presenting it to the marine. 3) Durandal is in control of the Marathon's internal map database. Lela does her best to present the data to the marine, but Durandal is preventing it from being directly uploaded to the marine's implants or helmet. He wants to taunt the marine, and withholding information or providing inacurate information is one of the ways he does this. |
