Clearing the air...

In Response To: The Ar'kives: Does Anybody Care? (REB)

Tycho's post actually says what I wanted to say, rather eloquently... but I wanted to address a couple of specific misconceptions in the thread.

REB - you talk of 'they', as though Fileball is some large corporation out to screw you.

Fileball is Randall Shaw, aka Frigidman. Period. Gary, Clem, and I help him run the place... but it's Randy's programming, and Randy's bandwidth, and Randy's money. When 'Fileball' asks that you pay to continue visiting, it's Randy saying that paying out of his pocket is no longer possible. (I'm surprised this didn't happen earlier - as Tycho said, he asked for voluntary donations quite some time ago, and received NOTHING.)

Tophet - you say that it's more complicated to upload files to b.org - wtf? You either drop 'em in a drop box, or mail 'em to archives@bungie.org - there's no descriptions to fill out, no registration needed, no pictures to upload... just mail/ftp the file! How is that MORE complicated than Fileball's submission process? (And as for re-uploading files - since I maintain both archives, there's no need to resubmit - I HAVE all the files locally. Just tell me what you want submitted, and it'll go up the next time there's an update - there's one overdue anyway.)

Fileball is not some faceless corporation out to screw you of your $3/month - it's a fan-created, fan-run site that simply ran up against the reality of bandwidth cost, after 3 years of serving you faithfully and freely. Yes, you can get Marathon files here, for nothing - but you can't get Myth files, or UT files, or Starcraft files, or Red Faction files, or Sims files... Fileball is BIG, and easy to use, and well-maintained; doesn't that DESERVE some support?

That's all I wanted to say.
