Hmm, well, insects such as ants have the 2 compound eyes and a few simpler eyes that mostly detect light(I think; if someone could correct me I'd be obliged). On ants at least, the simple eyes are situated around what we humans would call the forehead.
So what did that mean? Not a whole lot, though perhaps the pfhor are incapable or sensing light without that third eye? Frankly I prefer Steve's theory.
