: Now affective is something I believe we've achieved admirably with
: Apotheosis. So when you're fighting onboard the UESC Ginger Bread Man,
: hopefully you really will feel like you're incased within millions of tons
: of cold steel... You'll feel like the walls of the basement to a Pfhor
: installation are litterally exuding menace, and the eery calm of the
: flooded cathedral will only put you more on edge.

Todd said it in one -- some point aways back in the design cycle, we hit this thing where our design styles synchronised and merged in a pretty nice way... as a result, the visual style throughout the whole game swings back and forth comfortably between two design ethics: Todd's to get the details JUST right, and mine to make you feel like you're actually in a PLACE. Be it textures, lighting, sounds... the whole point of the visual experience is to actually drag you INTO the game world.

: Immersion has always been the strong point of the Marathon series, mostly
: conveyed through story and more subtle visual Ques. But with our ability
: to push the Marathon engine the way we can these days, I think it's more
: appropriate to make the visuals as subtle as a train wreck.

Rubicon was decidedly Kubrickian in approach -- it was painted in very fine strokes and had a definite dream-like quality acquired (I assume) through smoothing and polishing. Todd and I are, indeed, as "subtle as a train wreck".

The levels and story sure are nice, but by God the monster placement is cruel.

: Or the matter driver... =P

I left out Big Jim coz it wasnt in a screenshot.

Oops, said too mcuh :P
