Todd said it in one -- some point aways back in the design cycle, we hit this thing where our design styles synchronised and merged in a pretty nice way... as a result, the visual style throughout the whole game swings back and forth comfortably between two design ethics: Todd's to get the details JUST right, and mine to make you feel like you're actually in a PLACE. Be it textures, lighting, sounds... the whole point of the visual experience is to actually drag you INTO the game world.

Rubicon was decidedly Kubrickian in approach -- it was painted in very fine strokes and had a definite dream-like quality acquired (I assume) through smoothing and polishing. Todd and I are, indeed, as "subtle as a train wreck".
The levels and story sure are nice, but by God the monster placement is cruel.
