The reason we are al still playing Marathon and have a fanatical following is that after say the third level or so you didn't feel like slaming you head aginst a wall repetedly. Doom was the same thing over and over. All the guns were pretty much same thing with diffrent values of damage and speeds.
After finding the key and getting ambushed for the billionth time I was gatting pretty bored. As I raced for the door only to go back and have to open it and try again. And for all this regergitation of the last hundred eves what did I get . . . Nothing!
There was no pay off, no story. In fact no reason to beat the game other then to say you had.
The one good thing I can say about the series was that the second one had some amazing arcitexture. Many of the levels were just great to look at. Of course the majority were not.
People got fed up with these plotless romps in violence and games started to become "Marathon-like". Now you would be hard pressed to find a pointless fps. Of course there is always Unreal(wich started as a story like game and found a better market in death matches), but who can contend with that.
