This is a more detailed explanation of a technique that was pretty much invented by Jason Harper with this map and this one. Sadly, it's not really widely used as the effect can only be made to look good under carefully controlled conditions. Operation Vengeance is the only scenario I know of that makes extensive use of the trick in its "true" form, but a simpler variant using landscape textures is a pretty common sight.
