: Question: What about terms like Habe Quiddam, where the map
: changes even if the text doesn't? (For that matter, are there other
: such cases? I can't exactly remember.) Including both images in
: the left column with an explanatory note would look confusing...
: maybe there'd be a note to click on the first map and receive a
: pop-up window with the second?

First of all, I think that this is great and I laude you for heading up this effort. The main question is, how much do you want this to look like the original terminal screens? For the Rubicon Volunteers series, I at first took Hamish's lead and ignored the picts until Scott, I believe, asked why (laziness, of course). Subsequently, I simply included the relevant picts and wrapped the text around them, with added commentary and footnotes. This didn't look anything like the originals, but that was not my intent. Since Hamish took pains to reproduce the look and feel of the terminals, I think that we should do the same.

The most elegant approach would be to do the picts in Flash. You could then click on a button to advance through the additional picts, but I don't own Flash and this could be a lot more work than most of us want to get into. One other thing I might note is that in some terminals, the lines of text appear sequentially rather than all at once - do we want to reproduce that effect as well?

I have a few suggestions. The first is to implement the graphics using animated gifs, but there would be no way to control the rate of presentation of images. Secondly, we could put the picts together as quicktime movies, using the controller to advance the images. You could, as you suggested, use pop-up windows, perhaps activated by clicking on the related text (eg. "a pattern buffer can be found here"). My favorite, if this is implementable in Hamish's original HTML, would be to use rollovers. In this way you could encode all associated picts to the same location and change them as you mouse over the selected text. This is tricky and I've never done it myself, but I know it can be done. I'll probably regret mentioning this, but I own a license for Adobe GoLive - what I lack is time.
