In Response To: Re: closure of the universe (millionmice)

: Um............. no. Halkings proved that there is a perfect balance and the
: universe will continue to expand. However, some say over time all matter
: in the universe may move into a black hole.

Sorry, as brilliant as Hawkins is, he hasn't PROVED anything. All of his work, and all work by anyone, in this field is theoretical, and until we actually develop instructments to measure things as exact as the velocity of planets and their acceleration (or deacceleration) neither theory will be proven.

Currently, I believe the closure of the universe theory IS the popular one among astromers and physicists alike.

However, many of them believe this is almost a mute point because there wont be anything but dead husks throughout the galaxy. "The galactic core has gone nova, haven't you heard?"

Anyway, that theory goes that the stars in the core being so close in proximity to each other burn up their fuel faster- and instead of just dying out like good little stars they go nova. This triggers other stars in the area to go nova prematurly- resulting in a LARGER explosion.... This chain reaction takes a long long long long time, and it wont reach for.. 112,000 years? my number on that is sketchy.

That theory is actually fairly well illustrated in Niven's Known Space series in books such as Flatlander..

Thats all I have to say on that
