Scott,

Thanks for responding to my questions about the plot line issues. I think that it is quite evident from the other posts in this forum and from the recent favorite Bungie scenario poll that Infinity was a good game, but it failed miserably in telling a story. M1 and M2 excelled at the stroy telling aspect of gameplay, giving the Marathon series a truly unique place in the history of gaming. To most of us, M2 was the pinnacle of the series, and Infinity was best forgotten. But you couldn't exactly ignore Infinity, either, when it came to developing Rubicon.

As I stated at the beginning of the Volunteers series, I had to assume that Durandal and Thoth got a divorce, in a sense. In order to reconcile your plot elements with Infinity, we would need to assume that both Tycho and Durandal somehow experienced multiple timelines, just as you did in Infinity. An equally plausable explanation is a suggestion that came out the the timeline discussions in this forum many months ago - perhaps Mark or Hamish could provide us a link. This suggestion is that the M2 timeline is really the only one that persists in the end, and that all of the events in Infinity occur just so that the M2 timeline can survive. In other words, the nova event at the end of M2 releases the W'rcacnter, which brings about chaos and violates the integrety of the space-time continuum. It is this disruption of time itself that allows the marine to move about in time and alter the past (call it multiple timelines if you want, but this is irrelevant in this explanation). Once the marine successfully contains the W'rcacnter, a paradox is created because its (their) release was necessary to create the chaos and disruption of time necessary to the events of Infinity in the first place. This results in an implosion of the events of Infinity into the nova event, containing the W'rcacnter and allowing the M2 scenario to continue as if nothing had happened. This is equivalent to what happened in the Star Trek TNG series finale. I'm not saying that this is how we should interpret Infinity, but it does provide a plausable way to reconcile Rubicon with Infinity.

: And Agent Shem, I'm glad you like the last screen. Your post
: made me smile.

I liked the last screen very much, too, and we'll have a full discussion of it at the end of the Volunteers series.
